Join other Cal parents as we meet with new UCPD Chief Yogananda Pittman and other members of the UC Berkeley administration to discuss crime and safety issues that affect our students.
The meeting will take place on Facebook Live via this link:
We encourage all SafeBears supporters to ask questions! You can do that either by—
Emailing them before the event to: calparents@berkeley.edu, or
By writing them in the Event comments on Facebook during the meeting
To help you get started, we’ve built a short list of a few of our most important questions. Pick a couple of the ones that most closely match your concerns and send them to Chief Pittman at: calparents@berkeley.edu.
Questions (choose 1-2 to include in your email)
How many UCPD officers are on patrol at any given time in the South Side of campus where the majority of students live?
Ten years ago, UCPD had almost 80 sworn officers. How many do you have today, and what is the specific plan to fill these vacancies to help keep students safe?
Do students want more UCPD presence? What do the latest student survey results show?
What steps is UCPD taking the prevent repeat sex offenders from targeting students on campus, in their dorms, and in off-campus housing? In May, three sex offenders attacked female students and one sex offender was linked to seven concerning reports. What is your plan here?
After an intruder broke into the Life Sciences building and threatened to kill the students taking class there last spring, an administration spokesperson said UC Berkeley would conduct a vulnerability assessment to ensure that all campus buildings were equipped with working door locks and cell phone coverage. Did that review ever happen? What were the results?
During that same incident in the Life Sciences building, a professor teaching there had no idea what steps to take in this emergency situation. What steps is UCPD and the administration taking to make sure all faculty and staff are properly trained to respond in such emergencies?
How many video cameras are deployed in and around campus? Are they in good working condition? Is there a dedicated UCPD video monitoring team in place today?
Can UCPD set up live video monitoring at key hotspots around campus to detect and deter crime before it happens?
Can UCPD use civilian volunteers and part-time staff to address non-critical functions to help the department focus its limited officers in the areas that matter most in keeping students safe?
Can UCPD plan to create USC-type Safe Zones in which people found to have committed crime on and around campus are subject to enhanced sentencing penalties? We’ve seen that the current approach of issuing so-called “stay-away” orders are not preventing repeat offenses around campus.
Thanks to all our supporters for making UC Berkeley safer for students!
