A Tale of Two Fences

After protesters demonstrated in front of UC President Michael Drake’s house last year, he felt concerned for his family’s safety. That’s why the UC Regents agreed to build a security fence around his house for an undisclosed sum of money.

We want the same thing for our students.

All UC Berkeley undergraduate housing is located off campus, including several in the South Side neighborhood which are regularly entered by dangerous intruders.

  • September 2022:—A homeless man entered Griffiths Hall (Unit 2) and entered a shower where a young woman was bathing

  • September 2022—An intruder commits sexual battery in Cunningham (Unit 2)

  • November 2022—An unregistered sex offender is arrested living beneath a Unit 3 stairwell in Spens-Black Hall

  • November 2022—The following incident occurs:

The Division of Student Affairs at Cal will soon be submitting a proposal to Chancellor Christ for funding to build security fences around Units 1, 2 and 3. Let’s tell the Regents this is a vital, and long-overdue measure which will keep our students safe.

If it’s good enough for UC President Drake’s family, it’s good enough for ours.
