As Cal parents, we receive a high number of safety alerts from UC Berkeley’s WarnMe notification system.
But are these alerts effective? We’ve seen numerous cases where alerts have:
been sent with minimal or confusing information
been sent long after a dangerous event has taken place
not been sent after a dangerous situation has taken place
and more.
According to the University,
The campus is required by federal law (the Clery Act) to notify the campus community when certain crimes that could pose a serious or ongoing threat to the campus are reported on or near campus property, or if there is an immediate threat to the health and safety of the campus community.
But for these notifications to be effective, they must be done in a much more consistent manner akin to how other universities report similar crime data. Cal students feel the same way.
Join us on Thursday, Aug 31 for an open discussion about the WarnMe notification system. Our goal is to identify areas for improvement and look at what other universities are doing. SafeBears leadership will then share these results with the administration and UCPD.
👉🏾 If you have safety notifications from other universities that can serve as good examples, please share them with us during our Zoom!
